  • The History of Gabbeh Rugs

    Gabbeh rugs (usually pronounced gah-bay) are a traditional variety of the Persian carpet, handmade by the nomads of the Fars province in South West Iran, with the most famous nomad groups of this region being the Qashqai and Luri Tribes. 

    Given the meaning a "bear's cub" and “raw, natural and uncut”, the rough and primitive carpet is a dense rug with heavy body and coarse quality, making them much thicker and coarser than other Persian carpets; sometimes as much as one inch in depth. 

    The Gabbeh like many other types of Persian rugs is made with local handspun wool and natural vegetable and plant dye. The designs are simple and the weavers take inspiration from the environment around them to weave simple human, animal, and tree motives, to adorn the carpets. Despite being tribal and rural, the abstract and cubist designs of the Persian Gabbeh adds a touch of modernism and as a result, the rugs are very popular in the homes and interiors of today.  Continue reading
